Oval face shape: haircuts and beards that balance it

The face is about one and a half times as long as it is wide. The forehead is a little wider than the jaw, and the jawline curves rather than angles.

How to tell if your face is oval

  • Length is clearly greater than width, but not extreme: roughly 1.5 to 1.
  • The forehead is slightly wider than the jaw.
  • The widest point is across the cheekbones, with no sharp corners at the jaw.
How to measure
  1. Pull your hair back and take a straight-on photo, or stand square to a mirror.
  2. Compare four distances: across the forehead (temple to temple), across the cheekbones at the widest point, across the jaw (corner to corner), and the full length from hairline to chin.
  3. Note which is widest, whether the jaw curves or turns a corner, and how long the face is compared with how wide it is.
  4. Many faces sit between two shapes. Treat the result as a starting point, not a verdict.

The idea

Proportions are already balanced, so the goal is to keep them that way instead of correcting anything. Hair type, density and routine should drive the choice more than face shape does.

Haircuts to look at

  • Textured crop. Keeps height and width in step without adding length.
  • Side part with a tapered finish. Neat and balanced; works at several lengths.
  • Medium layers. Adds movement while the outline stays even on both sides.

Facial hair to look at

  • Short boxed beard. Follows the natural jaw curve without changing its proportions.
  • Light stubble. Low maintenance and leaves the outline as it is.

What tends to work against the balance

  • Very tall styles or long, flat hair pulled straight down can stretch an already slightly long face.
  • Heavy fringes cut very short can hide the forehead that balances the jaw.

What to say at the barber

  • “My face is fairly balanced. I'd like something that suits my hair type and takes about five minutes to style.”
  • “Keep the sides tidy and leave enough on top to part or push to the side.”
