Heart face shape: haircuts and beards that balance it

The forehead is the widest part of the face. The cheekbones are a little narrower, and the jaw tapers to a smaller, often more pointed chin.

How to tell if your face is heart

  • Forehead width is greater than cheekbone width, and cheekbone width is greater than jaw width.
  • The jaw narrows noticeably toward the chin.
  • A widow's peak is common with this shape but is not required.
How to measure
  1. Pull your hair back and take a straight-on photo, or stand square to a mirror.
  2. Compare four distances: across the forehead (temple to temple), across the cheekbones at the widest point, across the jaw (corner to corner), and the full length from hairline to chin.
  3. Note which is widest, whether the jaw curves or turns a corner, and how long the face is compared with how wide it is.
  4. Many faces sit between two shapes. Treat the result as a starting point, not a verdict.

The idea

Adding some visual weight lower down, at the jaw or chin, balances a wider forehead. Styles that soften the top of the face, like a side-swept fringe, reduce the contrast.

Haircuts to look at

  • Side-swept fringe. Breaks up the width of the forehead.
  • Chin-length or longer layers. Volume around the jaw adds width where the face is narrower.
  • Medium-length textured cut. Movement below the cheekbones balances the top.

Facial hair to look at

  • Full beard. Adds weight and width around the jaw and chin.
  • Anchor beard or chin strap with mustache. Builds out the lower face without covering the cheeks.

What tends to work against the balance

  • Heavy volume piled high on top or swept straight back adds to the widest part.
  • A clean-shaven face with very short sides gives the narrow chin nothing to balance against the forehead.

What to say at the barber

  • “I'd like a side fringe and some length around the jaw to balance a wider forehead.”
  • “Can you build the beard out a little at the chin?”
