Side part: which face shapes it balances and how to ask for it

Hair is parted a few centimetres off-centre and combed or brushed across, with tapered or scissor-cut sides. It works from short to medium length.

What it does to the outline

Creates a diagonal line across the forehead. Brushed up at the front it adds height, and kept flatter it gives a clean, classic outline.

Face shapes it tends to balance

  • Oval. A neat default that keeps balanced proportions.
  • Square. The diagonal line breaks up straight edges.
  • Heart. Sweeping hair across the forehead reduces its apparent width.
  • Diamond. Volume at the front adds width across the forehead.

What to say at the barber

  • “A classic side part with a taper on the sides. Leave enough on top to comb over.”
  • “Cut the part in where my hair naturally falls.”

Styling

  • Comb the part in while the hair is damp, then dry the top with a brush for volume.
  • A light cream or pomade holds the line without a stiff finish.

Upkeep

Every 4 to 6 weeks to keep the part and sides sharp.
