Diamond face shape: haircuts and beards that balance it

The cheekbones are the widest part of the face. The forehead and the jaw are both narrower, and the chin is often angular.

How to tell if your face is diamond

  • Cheekbone width is greater than both forehead width and jaw width.
  • The forehead and the jaw are about the same, both narrower than the cheeks.
  • The face narrows toward the chin.
How to measure
  1. Pull your hair back and take a straight-on photo, or stand square to a mirror.
  2. Compare four distances: across the forehead (temple to temple), across the cheekbones at the widest point, across the jaw (corner to corner), and the full length from hairline to chin.
  3. Note which is widest, whether the jaw curves or turns a corner, and how long the face is compared with how wide it is.
  4. Many faces sit between two shapes. Treat the result as a starting point, not a verdict.

The idea

Adding width at the forehead and at the jaw balances wide cheekbones. Fringes, side parts with volume, and a beard that fills the lower face all help.

Haircuts to look at

  • Textured fringe or side-swept front. Adds width across the forehead.
  • Side part with volume at the front. Brings the upper face closer to the width of the cheeks.
  • Chin-length layers. Volume near the jaw balances the cheekbones.

Facial hair to look at

  • Full beard. Adds width along the jaw.
  • Short boxed beard. Fills out the lower face and keeps the outline even.

What tends to work against the balance

  • Hair slicked straight back and flat leaves the cheekbones as the widest and most visible point.
  • Very short sides combined with a tight beard remove width from the jaw and forehead.

What to say at the barber

  • “I'd like some volume at the front and a bit of length at the sides to balance wide cheekbones.”
  • “Can you shape the beard fuller along the jaw?”
